The design is a red field with an inverted isosceles triangle based on the top edge of the field pointed toward the bottom edge of the field bearing the horizontal tricolor of black, light blue and white with the rising sun centered on top of the black band. The rising sun symbolizes the dawning of a new era. The color black is for the African ancestry of the people; the blue for hope; the red for energy or life of the people. The successive coloring of yellow, blue, and white (from the sun down) also stands for the sun, sea, and sand. The blue also represents the Caribbean Sea, and the V-shape is the symbol of victory. ⚠ Prop 65 WARNING International Courtesy Flag Rules As a matter of courtesy, it is appropriate to fly the flag of a foreign nation on your boat when you enter and operate on its waters. There are only a limited number of positions from which flags may be displayed. Therefore, when a flag of another nation is flown, it usually must displace one of the flags displayed in home waters. However, it is hoisted only after the appropriate authorities have granted clearance. Until clearance is obtained, a boat must fly the yellow’Q’ flag. Often cruising sailors fly both the courtesy flag and the quarantine flag (Q flag below) on entering a foreign port. On a mastless powerboat, the courtesy flag of another nation replaces any flag that is normally flown at the bow of the boat. When a motorboat has a mast with spreaders, the courtesy flag is flown at the starboard spreader. On a two-masted motorboat, the courtesy flag displaces any flag normally flown at the forward starboard spreader. On a sailboat, the courtesy flag is flown at the boat’s starboard spreader, whether the United States ensign is at the stern staff, or flown from the leech. If there is more than one mast, the courtesy flag is flown from the starboard spreader of the forward mast.
